In an era where digital omnipresence reigns supreme, the significance of website development cannot be overstated. It is the digital façade through which brands present themselves to the world, akin to the polished exterior of a prestigious institution. However, the process of website development is often underestimated and underappreciated.

So, what exactly is website development? It's not merely the act of slapping together a few web pages with fancy graphics and calling it a day. No, dear Brightscout reader, it is a meticulous craft, a delicate dance between aesthetics and functionality, a labyrinth of code and creativity.

At its core, website development encompasses the design, construction, and maintenance of a digital platform accessible via the World Wide Web. It involves a plethora of disciplines, including but not limited to graphic design, user experience (UX) design, and software engineering. Like a well-orchestrated symphony, each component must harmonize seamlessly to create a user-friendly and visually captivating experience.

Now, why is it so important for a brand to have a good website? Ah, the million-dollar question, or perhaps in today's digital economy, the billion-dollar question. Imagine, if you will, a prospective client stumbling upon a website reminiscent of the early days of the internet—cluttered, confusing, and downright archaic. Do you think they'll stick around to explore what your brand has to offer? Unlikely.

A good website serves as the virtual storefront of a brand, the digital handshake extended to potential customers. It's often the first point of contact, and as the age-old adage goes, first impressions matter. A well-designed website not only captivates visitors but also instills trust and credibility in the brand. It signals professionalism and competence, qualities that are paramount in today's competitive landscape.

Moreover, a good website isn't just about aesthetics; it's about functionality. User experience reigns supreme in the digital realm, and a clunky, convoluted website is akin to a bureaucratic nightmare—nobody wants to navigate through endless red tape to find what they're looking for. A seamless user experience translates to higher engagement, increased conversions, and ultimately, a healthier bottom line.

But wait, there's more! In the age of search engine optimization (SEO), a good website isn't just desirable; it's essential for survival in the digital jungle. Search engines like Google are the gatekeepers of the internet, and they favor websites that are well-optimized, mobile-responsive, and regularly updated. Neglecting website development is akin to shooting oneself in the foot and then attempting to run a marathon—it's a futile endeavor.

Keywords are the foundation of SEO. They are the words and phrases that users type into search engines to find information. Conducting keyword research helps identify relevant terms and topics that users are searching for in your niche. Incorporating these keywords strategically into your website's content, meta tags, headings, and URLs can improve your visibility in search results. Content is king in the world of SEO. High-quality, relevant, and engaging content not only attracts visitors but also signals to search engines that your website is authoritative and trustworthy. Creating original, informative, and valuable content that addresses the needs and interests of your target audience can help improve your search rankings and drive organic traffic. Furthermore, on-page optimization involves optimizing individual web pages to improve their relevance and visibility in search results. This includes optimizing meta titles, descriptions, headings, and URL structures, as well as incorporating relevant keywords, internal links, and multimedia elements. On-page optimization ensures that search engines can understand and index your content effectively.

Technical SEO focuses on optimizing the technical aspects of your website to enhance its crawlability, indexability, and overall performance. This includes optimizing site speed, mobile responsiveness, site architecture, and navigation, as well as fixing technical issues such as broken links, duplicate content, and crawl errors. Technical SEO ensures that search engines can access and interpret your website's content efficiently. User experience (UX) is also increasingly important in SEO. Search engines prioritize websites that offer a positive and seamless user experience, including fast loading times, intuitive navigation, mobile-friendliness, and secure browsing. Optimizing your website for UX not only improves search rankings but also enhances user satisfaction and engagement.

For all these reasons, your clients will want you to be the person who brings the solutions for them and develop THE website. A website that leaves everyone flabbergasted, mouths open with excitement. Easy task, right? No, not at all.

Let’s dive deeper into the journey of making it happen:

Step 0: Design Handoff

Make sure you gather all of the relevant content and resources before beginning. That includes getting the finalized site map, prototypes, and design assets, as well as asking about metadata and open graph image preferences (things you may overlook at first but could delay the project later on). This step is really important because you don't want to be in the middle of a build and get stuck waiting on a client, or have to backtrack unnecessarily.

The design handoff phase serves as the proverbial starting line of website development, laying the groundwork for a harmonious collaboration between design and development teams. It represents the seamless transition from concept to execution, from pixels to code, and ultimately, from vision to reality. As such, it merits careful attention, clear communication, and collaborative effort to ensure a smooth and successful journey towards the realization of a stellar website:

1. Gather design files (for desktop, tab and mobile versions of the site)

2. Gather the favicon, open graph image, styles and components from the Guideline pages in the design file

3. Get access to all necessary accounts (Figma, hosting, 3rd party apps, integrations, Analytics, etc.)

Step 1: Foundation

This is arguably the most important step, because it’s truly the foundation for the rest of the project. If you get this right, the rest of the build will go smoothly.

🗒️ Tip: You can skip most of this step if you're using a template or framework.

  1. Determine class naming convention (we recommend Client First)
  2. Create style guide
  3. Set up global classes
  4. Determine CMS structure (if there is one)
  5. Develop symbols (nav, footers, standard sections)

Style guides serve as the blueprint for the website's visual identity, encompassing key elements such as color palettes, typography, imagery guidelines, and UI components. Think of them as the rulebook that governs how various design elements should be utilized and presented across the website.

Step 2: Build

This is the fun part – it's time for the designs to come to life! Just don't forget to style the boring pages (404).

  1. Develop static elements & components
  2. Develop CMS template pages (using placeholder CMS items)
  3. Connect dynamic content to the CMS
  4. Develop custom success and error states on forms
  5. Develop 404 page
  6. Check designs on each breakpoint view and develop accordingly

Step 3: Animate

While there aren't a lot of items involved in animating, we still tend to dedicate a large block of time to this step because it can require a lot of testing, iterating, and revisions. Tip: This is usually a good time to run the site by the client for feedback and revisions.

  1. Create click and hover interactions
  2. Create scroll-based parallax animations
  3. Implement lottie and video animations provided by the designer

Step 4: Populate

It's starting to feel real! You're probably excited to launch the site now that the front end is ready to go, just make sure you don't skip these tiny details.

  1. Replace placeholder content with finalized content
  2. Replace placeholder CMS items with live items
  3. Add alt text to all images
  4. Add title tag, meta description, and open graph image to each page
  5. Add favicon
  6. Add Open Graph Image
  7. Add email address to form submission notifications
  8. Install analytics scripts
  9. Setup 3rd party integrations

Step 5: Testing & QA

This is usually the most tedious step, but it's what separates the good sites from the great sites.

  1. Test forms throughout the site, check success and error states
  2. Test all buttons and links, check for broken links
  3. Check for proper heading structure (no more than one H1 per page)
  4. Compress images if necessary
  5. Test automations and integrations
  6. View and test on all breakpoints (desktop, tablet, mobile) and browsers (Safari, Chrome)
  7. Test the site using

Step 6: Launch & Client Handoff

Now it's time to clean up the backend of the site so that it's ready to transfer to the client and/or go live!

  1. Update all class names to be consistent with the naming structure
  2. Delete unused pages, media items, classes, and interactions
  3. Delete unused CMS items and collections
  4. Delete form test submissions (in project settings)
  5. Record Client Training Videos
  6.  Review this entire checklist again to make sure you didn't miss anything
  7. Setup SSL
  8. Connect domain & Migrate data to production
  9. Publish

The client handoff stage in website development is a critical juncture that marks the transition from project completion to client ownership. It's the moment when the proverbial baton is passed from the development team to the client, signifying the culmination of collaborative efforts and the beginning of the client's journey as the steward of their digital asset.

Several key reasons underscore the importance of the client handoff stage:

Empowerment: The client handoff empowers clients to take ownership of their website and assume responsibility for its ongoing management and maintenance. By providing clients with the necessary tools, documentation, and training, they gain autonomy and control over their digital presence, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability.

Transparency: The client handoff promotes transparency and fosters trust between the design + development team and the client. By openly sharing insights, knowledge, and resources, the design and development team demonstrates a commitment to transparency and collaboration, laying the groundwork for a positive and enduring client relationship.

Accountability: The client handoff holds both parties accountable for their respective roles and responsibilities. By clearly delineating post-launch support agreements, maintenance plans, and escalation protocols, expectations are managed, and potential issues are addressed proactively, minimizing the risk of misunderstandings or disputes down the line.

Sustainability: The client handoff ensures the long-term sustainability and viability of the website beyond the initial development phase. By equipping clients with the skills, resources, and support they need to manage and evolve their website independently, they are better positioned to adapt to changing needs, technologies, and market dynamics over time.

Continuity: The client handoff facilitates continuity and seamless transition between project phases. By providing comprehensive documentation, version control, and knowledge transfer, the development team ensures that clients have the necessary information and resources to build upon the foundation established during the development process, promoting continuity and consistency in their digital strategy.
